Who Was Titus Sparrow?

Titus Sparrow (1908–1974) was a Boston native, educator, engineer, accomplished tennis player, and tireless community advocate whose vision helped shape the South End we know today. After overcoming a childhood battle with rickets, he graduated from MIT, where he studied machine design for electronics. In the 1930s, he spent four years in Russia teaching tool and die making while helping lay out public tennis courts, reflecting his lifelong belief that recreation should be accessible to everyone—not just a privileged few.

Returning to Boston, Sparrow dedicated his life to expanding opportunities through sport and civic engagement. He founded free tennis programs for city youth, advocated for more public tennis courts, and worked alongside neighbors to improve the South End.

His efforts ultimately helped transform a neglected urban renewal site into the community park that now bears his name. Although he passed away before the park was completed, Titus Sparrow Park was dedicated in his honor in June 1976, ensuring his legacy would continue to inspire future generations.
