Investing in the Future of Our Park Lawn
The lawn at Titus Sparrow Park is everyone’s backyard. It’s where neighbors gather, children play, concerts are played, picnics take place, and our community comes together. Since July 1st, the Friends of Titus Sparrow Park (FTSP) assumed responsibility for park lawn maintenance from the City of Boston and we’ve partnered with GreenOp Landscape for our lawn care needs.
This fall, we’re taking an important next step toward the long-term health of the turf: the majority of the lawn will be temporarily closed from October 6 through October 30 while we complete a fall hydroseeding project.
While we realize lawn closure isn’t ideal, this critical time allows the vulnerable grass seed the time required to establish proper roots before winter.
What is happening?
On Tuesday, October 6, fencing will be installed around the majority of the lawn.
On Wednesday, October 7, hydroseed will be sprayed across the lawn.
Hydroseeding applies a mixture of grass seed, mulch, water, and other materials to help establish new grass. Once the hydroseed is applied, the most important thing we can do is keep the area protected while the new grass germinates and develops strong roots.
The fencing will remain in place through Friday, October 30, when it will be removed, just in time for our big Halloween party!
Why are you temporarily closing the grass?
The lawn gets frequent, heavy use throughout the year. While that is exactly what makes Titus Sparrow Park such a vibrant community space, it also puts significant stress on the turf.
Newly seeded grass is particularly vulnerable to walking, running, playing. Keeping the lawn closed during this critical growing period gives the new grass the best possible chance to take root and creates a stronger, more resilient turf for years to come.
Temporary lawn closure October 6 through October 30
The grass was renovated in 2024. Why are you doing this again?
The lawn was renovated in 2024 by the city during the park renovation, but maintaining a heavily used urban lawn requires periodic investment and hydroseeding of the denuded areas. The goal of this proactive project is to establish grass seed in areas that are completely stripped while strengthening thinned areas of the lawn. Regular lawn care ensures that our turf remains in good condition, thereby avoiding a more time-consuming and expensive intervention.
Why now?
Fall is the ideal time to hydroseed due to the combination of warm soil and cooler air. The fall generally brings more consistent rainfall and less intense evaporation so the seedbed remains consistently moist.
The timing will allow us to complete the project and remove the fencing for our Halloween party on October 31.
When will the lawn reopen?
The lawn will reopen for community use once the fencing is removed on Friday, October 30.
Please note that newly established grass will still need ongoing care after reopening. We ask everyone to continue treating the lawn with care so that the investment made this fall can have a lasting impact. Bicycles, scooters, digging dogs, and other activities that damage the grass may necessitate further intervention.
Why are The Friends of Titus Sparrow Park paying for this?
On July 1, The Friends of Titus Sparrow Park took over lawn care from the City of Boston.
Boston’s public spaces have a long history of being maintained through a portion of private donations. Historically, higher intensity horticulture, turf restoration, and specific beautification projects (i.e. fence repairs) have been funded through the generosity of Friends organizations and the larger community. We are grateful for our community’s support and are committed to putting our financial resources towards projects that improve key elements of the park for everyone.
Who is caring for the lawn?
We’re working with GreenOp Landscape, a full-service landscaping company that has a work history with many South End organizations such as Union Park Neighborhood Association and Union Church.
Partnering with a professional landscape company is an important part of our commitment to moving from reactive lawn care to a more proactive approach focused on the long-term health and resilience of the park.

Why is a resilient lawn so important?
The lawn is a central component of Titus Sparrow Park. A healthy lawn makes it possible to host free concerts, family events, walking tours, garden programming, and countless informal gatherings throughout the year. Our goal is to ensure that the turf that can withstand frequent community use and remain a healthy, welcoming space for years to come.
Will events continue during the closure?
Yes–we remain committed to offering free events and programs for the community. While access to the lawn will be limited during the project, we will continue to share information about upcoming activities and how the park can be enjoyed during this period.
What can I do to help?
The most impactful thing you can do to help: please do not remove the fence and remain outside of the fenced areas.
The closure is temporary, and respecting the fenced off lawn is critical to giving the new grass the time it needs to establish.
