Titus Sparrow Park Gardens

In Titus Sparrow Park, there are 8 community gardens along West Rutland Square and 7 gardens at the West Newton Street entrance, open to residents of the four neighborhoods involved in designing the park (Claremont, Cosmopolitan, Pilot Block and St. Botolph) and the Union United Methodist Church. Gardens must be kept clean and in good condition (see guidelines). Gardeners are expected to take out a $15 membership in the South End Lower Roxbury Open Space Land Trust. Send to SELROSLT, P.O. Box 180923, Boston, MA 02118.

All the plots have been assigned for 2010. To sign up for a possible garden in 2011, contact Ann Hershfang.

Also, volunteers are needed to help with ongoing light maintenance, weeding, and fall/spring bulb planting. It is a fun way to enjoy the park and your neighbors. Interested parties should contact Jennifer Leonard or call 617-267-2067.

GUIDELINES FOR TITUS SPARROW PARK COMMUNITY GARDENS

  1. Gardening in public parks is a privilege. Gardens in Titus Sparrow Park must be kept planted, weeded, and trash-free so as to enhance the park and its entrances. Please put weeds, branches, etc., behind--not in--the park trash cans.
  2. Garden assignments are for one year. Gardeners must notify the Coordinators by March 15 each year whether you will be keeping your garden.
  3. A garden plot showing no evidence of being worked by May 15 may be forfeited and allocated to the gardener next on the waiting list. As may any garden that is not cared for. Gardens must be cleaned for winter by November 15.
  4. Garden plots will be available only to those without a plot in any other local public community garden and live in the Claremont, Cosmopolitan, St. Botolph, Pilot Block neighborhoods or are members of Union United Methodist Church.
  5. A gardener moving out of the area or wanting to relinquish the plot must promptly notify the Garden Coordinators so the plot can be reassigned.
  6. If temporarily unable to maintain the plot, you are encouraged to have another gardener, friend or neighbor take over for that time. If this is not possible, please contact the Garden Coordinators for a temporary solution.
  7. Community gardeners shall not bring pets into any plot.
  8. Gardeners shall respect other gardeners' property and not trespass or remove another gardener's produce without permission.

We hope you enjoy this special opportunity to be outdoors in the city.

  9. Gardeners are asked for a $20 donation to the South End Land Trust. Please mail it to South End Land Trust, Box 180923, Boston MA 02118, indicating that you are a Sparrow Park gardener, by May 1. Or drop it off at Ann Hershfang’s house @64 West Rutland Square in the mailbox under the steps
